The Basic: What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of optimizing your web pages to make them reach a high position in the search results of Google or any other search engine. SEO focuses on improving the rankings in the organic search results, like the image below.
If you have a website and want to get more traffic, it should be a part of your marketing efforts to help increase your organic search results. In this article, we’ll discuss the way to organically increase your SEO.
To start, make sure your website is setup correctly (this is a great reason to hire a professional web designer). While creating a custom website, it’s important to add the correct information to maximize SEO. This comes from various plugins used on the backend of your website, as well as, meta descriptions, alt text and file names. It’s really a matter of putting all of the puzzle pieces together correctly.
Google defines the algorithm that we continually strive to “hit”. Since the algorithm is always changing, no one ever knows the exact number to hit. However, we’re always imputing the numbers that are showing results for our clients.
There are two types of SEO factors, on-page and off-page.
On-page SEO factors are those elements that you can influence within your actual website. These elements include technical aspects, such as:
- Quality of code
- Site speed
- Page load time
- Image optimization
- Website structure
Possibly the most important aspect is:
The quality of the copy on every page within your website.
Off-page SEO factors are those elements that drive traffic to your website. Drivers back to your website are links from other website, such as:
- Social media
- Email newsletters
- Marketing efforts outside of your website
That being said, the most important part of off-page SEO is the quality of links coming back to your site. If you partner with high quality and well ranked sites, you will have quality links back (Google recognizes the credibility of other websites).
Overall, learning how to optimize your website to the best possible presentation, can be difficult and tough to understand. The algorithms continue to change and evolve. If you’re not working directly in the industry, keeping up and changing takes a lot of work.
