First things first: Take the time to know who you’re talking to. Think about the people you’re communicating with, what you’re offering them, and why they need it. Once you understand your demographic focus, determine your messaging approach and don’t be afraid to push the envelope. Bear in mind that the message you’re sending will end up in a crowded inbox—and it could land next to a message from a competitor! What’s going to make your email stand out?

Now think about the subject line. For your email to get noticed, the subject line should be both catchy and informative. Make it crystal clear why your email needs to be opened—once you’ve got your foot in the door, you can hit em’ with the facts.

Finally, consider your layout and content. What does your email look like? Create a template that is personal and intimate. One way to achieve this is to include a recipient’s first name in the email greeting. Once you’ve engaged your readers, provide them with just enough information to make them want to keep reading. Remember to encourage clicks to your website, and make your call to action strong!

Dollar Shave Club has really honed in on their demographic and provides a killer campaign around their product.
